The Scrutinies

The Scrutinies for the elect are celebrated on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sunday of Lent.

Throughout the Lenten season, the elect are at the center of the parish community's prayer as they "wrestle with demons" and as "angels wait on them." The Scrutinies are more than an exercise in awareness of personal sin; they are a faith-filled grappling with a world in which sin reigns. Through the scrutinies the elect, in preparation for baptism, are turning over to God any hold sin has on them. The elect and the community of the faithful together come to know Christ, who is a fountain of living water, the Light of the world, and everlasting life. The elect are living symbols for the entire community on their journey of renewing their own baptismal commitment.
